The youngest of six talented sisters, Elyse d’Abreau was destined for stardom—until a boating
accident took everything from her. Now, the most beautiful singer in Tobago can’t sing. She can’t even speak.
Seeking quiet solitude, Elyse accepts a friend’s invitation to Atargatis Cove. Named for the mythical first mermaid, the Oregon seaside town is everything Elyse’s home in the Caribbean isn’t: an ocean too cold for swimming, parties too tame for singing, and people too polite to pry—except for one.
Christian Kane is a notorious playboy—insolent, arrogant, and completely charming. He’s also the only person in Atargatis Cove who doesn’t treat Elyse like a glass statue. He challenges her to express herself, and he admires the way she treats his younger brother, Sebastian, who believes Elyse is the legendary mermaid come to life.
When Christian needs a first mate for the Cove’s high-stakes Pirate Regatta, Elyse reluctantly stows her fear of the sea and climbs aboard. The ocean isn’t the only thing making waves, though—swept up in Christian’s seductive tide and entranced by the Cove’s charms, Elyse begins to wonder if a life of solitude isn’t what she needs. But changing course again means facing her past. It means finding her inner voice. And scariest of all, it means opening her heart to a boy who’s best known for
breaking them…
I am knees deep in this story and while I'm not quite ready to review it I gotta say have you looked at the cover? I mean c'mon, the cover alone makes me want to do backflips and because Interracial pairings on covers rarely happen where they exist together, meaning not stock art and manipulated but actually touching each other. That was a win-win for sure for me and we actually featured the cover in on "Favorites" month on our other book blog, Twinja Book Reviews here.
Off to my Dream Cast:
For Elyse(or for my Caribbean gyals Ay-leese) I kinda had to rack my brain for who I saw. So far in the book Elyse hasn't described herself in detail but my first thoughts ran to entertainers I know of Trini descent. Now that I'm further I think I see a little bit of Vashtie Kola when I picture Elyse. She is of actual Trinidadian Descent( I know, I know technically Elyse is Tobagoan) and she has brown skin and curly hair just like the girl on the cover. Plus she totally has that quiet girl thing going on with her look. What do you think?
Okay so I must admit the boy on the cover doesn't remind me of Christian at all. Mainly because he seems older while the guy on the cover looks much younger, so I really had to think of all my celebrity crushes to uncover he reminded me of physically. Translation: I hit up my Pinterest board of Sexy White Boys. I know I'm terrible XD But I stumbled across a Danish model I always see in magazines named Mathias Lauridsen and something just clicked. Besides he kinda looks like the boy on the cover, right?
And off to her partner in crime Kirby. Now I think with Kirby, it was easier for me to imagine her. She's actually more like half Trini and I remember one actress from the 90s I loved growing up that was half Trini too.Y'all may know her as Ashley Banks from Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, but she was simply Tatyana Ali to her worshippers(aka me). I can't for the life of me tell is Kirby is half white and Trini or Half Trini and half American Black but this is who I see as Kirby and it doesn't hurt that she's Afro-Latina(the actress is half Panamanian).
I'll be reviewing this book August 6th(my birthday yay!) for the Diverse Book Tours Blog Tour, so I hope to see y'all there!
